Tips For Survival Resourcefulness:

  • Think like MacGyver

  • Assess and encompass all available resources. Then formulate a solution using those resources.

  • Try to have tools on hand to fix a situation before you end up stuck in it.

  • Call for help (if possible) before you actually render assistance to someone in need.

Life Raft Survival Tips:

  • Stability is key! If your central buoyancy point is centralized you are going to rock more.

  • Archimedes principle states that the buoyancy created by a submerged object is equal to the weight of the water displaced. (water weighs 8 lbs. per gallon)

  • Make sure the water is safe or stay out of it!

  • Ensure you have protection from exposure.

  • Hydration will be your biggest priority because you will be expending lots of energy rowing.

  • Food is secondary but you may be able to catch birds using your raft as a place to land and take a rest.

Water Contamination:

  • Potential sources: leaks in storage and transportation containers, radioactive nuclear contaminates, volcanic activity, naturally occurring mineral contaminates like arsenic, etc.

  • A solar still is not going to remove industrial contaminates.

  • Boiling does not remove these contaminates.

  • Lifestraws will not remove these industrial contaminates either
