Before an Earthquake
-
Realize that earthquakes can happen anywhere and at any time. You may be with your family but you may be away from your family.
-
Think about getting earthquake insurance. Damage from Earthquakes can pile up quickly.
-
Take a look at your house. How is it vulnerable: power and gas lines running to it, roof is old and sagging, etc.?
-
Have a small group of items nearby to protect eyes, head, and feet in an earthquake. Construction material will be blown through the air and there may be glass on the ground
3 Steps to Take During an Earthquake
-
Make sure the children know what to do. It will be scary and they may panic.
-
Get under something sturdy and stay put. Make sure it is not attached to a wall. If you’re outside crouch down and if you’re in your car stop and pull over if possible.
-
Let your muscle memory from all of the practice that you did take over.
4 Steps to Take After An Earthquake
-
Be ready for aftershocks. Let your children know they will be coming.
-
Check to see if anyone needs medical attention.
-
Get away from immediate danger: gas smells, crumbling walls.
-
Shut off gas, water, and power to house. Make sure you have the right tool for the job nearby.

"I was always the mom with a case of water bottles and blankets in the trunk of her car and famous for saying, "Just in case..." Four years ago when I began to see signs of a deteriorating economy, I wondered, "Is there a way I can be proactive and get my family ready for an uncertain future?"
The answer was, "Yes!" and that's when The Survival Mom was born.
